"How My Cousin Married My Boyfriend" - Nollywood Actress Opens Up

Nollywood actress, Mina Horsefall recently opens up on what she describes as the worst betrayal of her life.

In an interview with Encomium magazine this week, she talks about how her boyfriend (now ex) who she dated for two years, and her cousin, utterly betrayed her and broke her heart.
She reveals that she still has not gotten over the betrayal and that she does not think she will ever forgive both of them.

Hear her:
"My first cousin and my ex betrayed me. The whole story is complicated. She dated my boyfriend and married him. I had no idea what was going on until they were about to get married because she was pregnant for him. I did not introduce him to her. She knew him. He was my Uncle's best man and we were in the bridal train. He met us together and went after me. We had a relationship for some years, two years at a stretch, then it became off and on and all those times she knew. She was even engaged to someone else at the time. Unknown to me she 'worked' her NYSC down to Lagos to have my boyfriend. She was living with him and it didn't make any sense to me. Until later on, I found out they were getting married. What pained me most and the worst part of it was when I got to hear about it and confronted him, he said he can never do anything with my sister.and there you are getting her pregnant and marrying her. It got all messed up. This happened in September 2012. I haven't forgiven them. I don't think I ever will"
What do you think of her story? Have you ever experience such betrayal or know anyone else who has? Do you have any advice for her?

TIWA SAVAGE, PETER OKOYE TO WED IN NOVEMBER

photo
November must be the new month of love as two of Nigeria’s most notable celebrity couples are prepping up to be joined in holy matrimony.
Delectable singer Tiwa Savage is getting married to her manager-fiance Tunji ‘T-Billz’ Balogun; so is Peter Okoye, one half the famous duo, Psquare who’s warming to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend and baby-mama, Lola Omotayo.
While the First Lady of Mavin Records and her beau picked November 23, 2013 as their wedding date, Peter and Lola will be moving on with their November 17, 2013 date to have their traditional marriage.
Last week, an excited Tiwa and her soon-to-be hubby travelled out to the UK shopping for some wedding items. ‘It is happening in November and here in Lagos. I have to follow due protocols before I can disclose further information’, one of the couple’s aides reveals. Tiwa and T-Billz are expected back in Lagos on Tuesday (October 29, 2013).
It was also revealed that the traditional marriage will be followed by a white wedding ceremony which is expected to hold in early 2014 in TheMaldives an island off the coast of the Indian Ocean. Tiwa reportedly visited the island in August, probably to make wedding arrangements.
‘It is nice to finally see these two taking the next step in their relationship. They have been through a lot together’ a source close to the couple said. In what started as a rumour and several denials, Tiwa and T-Billz’s relationship suddenly took a dramatic twist when he formally proposed on Tiwa’s 34th birthday on February 5, 2013.
On their part, Peter and Lola have been quite open with their wedding plans. The November traditional wedding will take place at the Arc Events Centre in Lekki, Lagos. Comedian Gbenga Adeyinka 1st and TV host Helen Paul have been selected to anchor the event.
On August 6, 2013, Peter proposed to Lola in grand style, presenting her with a brand new Range Rover Evoque, bouquet of flowers and a stunning diamond ring. Together, the couple have two children, four year old Cameron and nine months old Aliona. A surprise bachelorette party was held on Saturday October 26 for Lola, attended by close friends.
Arrangements are said to be in top gear as Peter is leaving no stone unturned to make the day an unforgettable one. ‘Peter plans to make the wedding as memorable as possible to please the woman who stood by him all these years’, a source said. Both couples are planning big for their days which leaves one to wonder if either of these November weddings will match up to the widely publicised and expensive Dubai wedding of 2face and Annie held earlier this year

THE EFFECT OF GLOBALIZATION ON NIGERIA CULTURE

Globalization refers to the increasingly global relationship of culture, people and economic activity. While culture on the other hand, is the recognition of good literature, enjoyment of good music, food and arts. According to Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor in his book, Primitive Culture, published in 1871.  Taylor said that culture is "that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society"(Taylor).
Globalization has brought positive and negative effect. As an African I would say that globalization has more negative effect than positive on our culture. It has affected our language, the way we dress, the younger once respect for their elders and ultimately our environment. In all these we also have some positive effect of globalization such as well-developed cities, sophisticated machineries and technologies
According to World Council of churches “no culture is possible without a language. It is an important perquisites and therefore to kill the language is to kill culture”(World Council of Churches). Using Nigeria as an example globalization is gradually killing our language as the younger generation find it hard to relate in their native dialect or see it as “old school” to speak their own native language. They perceive English language as ultimate.
I remember my mother would tell us of how rude we were. She would tell us of how when she was a child she’d ask her parent virtually everything and anything before she does them because of the fear and respect she has for her parent. Unlike, what we see with children/youth today. Because of Globalization children no longer sit around fireplace at night to listen to stories, as my mother would say. Stories, that promotes integrity, peace, unity, love, and values of respect. Rather they prefer watching late night movies or playing video game
According to World council of churches “the youth prefer the western beats to the local artist and hair styles, shoes clothing keep to the trends of the western fashion scene”(World council of churches). Africans generally respect their bodies and believes that a woman who does otherwise has lost her self-respect or has no elderly person at home to caution her. We can see that because of globalization women walk almost naked and call it “fashion” in our today’s world.
Globalization has brought about great technologies, sophisticated machineries that make life easy for humans. But with this advancement comes problems. People are forced to live from hand to mouth because they use their salaries to buy these so called new invented machineries or items. The reason they do this is because nobody wants to be left behind. Everyone wants to go with “the flow”. Nobody wants to feel or be seen as outdated.
The advancement in technology has not only damaged the physical environment with the emission a high percentage of carbon dioxide but it has also changed the temperature thereby causing Global Warming. Pollution is another product of globalization. With globalization our soil, water and air have been polluted and this causes genetic impact on individuals. That is when a gene is altered it alters the physiology of that individual hence producing altered enzyme which ends up causing destructive diseases such as Alzheimer’s, brain dysfunction. Polluted water on the other hand is very harmful either by causing typhoid or cholera. Even when globalization has been seen as good because it has prompted growth in developing countries, which has made humans life easier, but its effect out weights the gain.
It can be seen that Globalization has brought a great impact to human lives. I would than conclude that culture is one strong tool for human survival even though in our todays world It is said to be constantly changing and easily lost because it exists only in our minds.

Edo State Government Denies Hosting BBA Winner Dillish

Dear Mr Edo State Governor, Lol, so only daily Independent published the news? It's going to take them at least 5hours or more before printing their normal routine news out, Abeg, Salute Bloggers. We are as faster as your breathe. ( Sighed) Anyway, our dear Mr Governor has denied hosting Dillish.
He said, she was not hosted by the Edo state government, but sure banker,  Governor Oshimhole hosted her. Okay! The question is, is Dillish from your state? And remember this Gomina wa,lol, is single, huh! I rest my case. Hope to hear, you are appointing her as a Special Adviser or her friend that actually arranged the meeting.....See long leg....lmao
Here is the press statement, please read......
EDO STATE GOVERNMENT DID NOT HOST BBA’S DILLISH.
Our attention has been drawn to a news report in Daily Independent of Friday, October 25, 2013, where one Mr. Eddie Iroh was quoted as expressing displeasure on a rumoured hosting of Dillish, the winner of Big Brother Africa. In the said report, Eddie Iroh was said to have “condemned the Governor for spending state’s funds so recklessly”.

The report added that “ the likes of Governors Oshiomhole, Fashola and Dickson who are in the habit of dipping their hands into public funds on such ventures should have known that in civilized climes, such celebrations were funded from the Governors’pockets and not public funds”. How libelous!

From the above, it is obvious that Mr. Eddie Iroh is suffering from brain wave. First, it would have been a thing of interest for Edo State Government to host the said BBA winner, Dillish, to justify her well-advertised declaration in the BBA House that Edo State people are very hospitable. That in itself was a global endorsement that is purely priceless. Again, if Dillish would agree, as a BBA ambassador, Edo State Government would be willing to host her in future to prove to cynics and naysayers like Eddie Iroh that Edo State is indeed, not only hospitable, but also a safe haven for those who intend to do legitimate business in the State. It will be a departure from orchestrated and concocted stories often peddled by jobless people like Eddie Iroh, who rather than devote their old age to reflect on their absurdities when they called the shots, have now taken to the cyber space for surfing cheap gossip, chit-chat and unfounded allegations.

To the best of our knowledge, Edo State did not host Dillish in whatever material particular. This could be verified from the Governor’s daily routines which are usually available for public consumption and can be confirmed from the Protocol Department of the Governor’s Office or Government House. Mr. Eddie Iroh’s comment is pure hallucination. Eddie Iroh’s story is an open sore that is festered with several incongruities, inanities, ambiguities and failing memory. He should provide evidence to show that Governor Oshiomhole dips his hands into public funds to host his private visitors or simply keep his mouth shut. We have gone past the age of Eddie Iroh, an age of those men of yesterday, who abused public institutions they presided over, to fest their nest at the expense of tax payers’ money. In Edo State, we are not only accountable to the people; we have also earned their respect and trust.
Signed
PRINCE KASSIM AFEGBU
SPECIAL ADVISER MEDIA & PUBLIC AFFAIRS TO THE EDO STATE GOVERNOR

World Day for Audio Visual Heritage

World Day for Audio Visual Heritage

Today commemorates 12 years of the celebration of the world day for Audio Visual Heritage which is annually observed on October 27 to build global awareness on preserving audio visual materials and documents.
The world day for audio visual heritage explore the world of sound recording, moving image, audio visual document such as films, radio and television programs and other audio visual materials.
The audio visual heritage document contain the primary records of the 21st centuries, which help to maintain the cultural identity of people, but countless documentary treasures have disappear since the invention of image and sound technologies.
Audio visual heritage proposal was approved at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) general conference in 2005 as a mechanism to raise this awareness.
The first world day for audio visual heritage was held on October 27, 2007 with the commemoration of the adoption in 1980 by 21st general conference for the safeguarding and prevention of moving images.
But the celebration of the world audio visual day seemed strange to many Nigerians.
Mr. Femi Osuntoki a senior lecturer in Nigerian Institute of Journalism and a radio presenter in Eko FM said;  “it is very strange to me, this is my first time of hearing this; am not sure they are observing it in Nigeria.”
Osuntoki said it will be good if the day is popularized in the country as it would help to maintain our culture and also reminds us of great Nigerians that have done good things in the nation, person like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnmadi Azikwe and many others.
He said it will be an avenue to create awareness and improve what is ongoing in the society and it can also serves as documentary to review a long time event that happen in the past, present, and that of the future.
The world day for audio visual heritage is a global observance and not a public holiday, countries that previously observed the day include Canada, Thailand Dan Mark and United State.

Kunle Afolayan Finally Open Up On Why He Doesn't Feature His Brothers In His Movies

In a recent interview with a national newspaper, movie producer and director, Kunle Afolayan, revealed why he rarely features his brothers - Gabriel and Aremu - in his movies.

"It would be a wrong casting if I feature my brothers in a movie because I want them to be a part of the production. I know some families in the industry that does that and I have explained it to them before. It is absolutely wrong casting.
I can’t imagine me playing the role of a policeman in a movie, while Gabriel plays the criminal. It is very wrong. The only way you can justify such casting is if he plays my brother. Even if we are both playing roles that are not linked in a movie, professionally, it is wrong. The Wayans brothers for instance, play the role of brothers in all their movies. Dharmendra and his children in any Indian movie would play father and children and the same goes for Amitabh Bachchan and his children. It is only in this country that a whole family plays diverse roles in one movie.
Professionally, it is wrong and I will never do it. If I’m not in a film and I think any of my brothers would fit into the movie, they will do it. Gabriel understands because I have explained to him several times." he explained.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • CNN's Karl Penhaul visits the Bulgarian Roma village where "Maria" grew up
  • "We gave her away. I didn't take any money," her biological mother says
  • DNA match traced birth parents of Maria to the village of Nikolaevo
  • Greek Roma couple who raised Maria are in custody charged with kidnapping
Nikolaevo, Bulgaria (CNN) -- The homes are built with mud and straw. The streets are dirt and puddles. An old Roma lady gestures that she's so hungry it feels like her belly has been slit.
This is Nikolaevo, a tumbledown Roma village in the heart of Bulgaria. If fate had dealt a girl known as "Maria" a different hand, she would have grown up here, surrounded by decay and poverty.
DNA tests have now solved part of the mystery of Maria, the child called the "blond angel" by Greek media after she was discovered during a police raid on a Roma camp in Farsala, Greece. Her birth parents are Bulgarian -- Saska Ruseva and Atanas Rusev -- and, like the Greek couple who had been raising Maria, they, too, are Roma.
"Maria's parents live by selling herbs they collect in the forest or recycling scrap metal. They get child support payments, too, but that's never enough," a neighbor who gave his name as George said.
Maria's biological family live in a one-room home made of the same mud bricks as the rest of the village. The walls have been whitewashed, and a single window is partly covered with a pane of glass, the rest with a sheet of plastic.
The inhabitants of Nikolaevo complain that when it rains, the houses flood and the mud buildings get drenched.
When we called at the home Friday, a few hours before the DNA match was confirmed, the Rusevs had left. Producers at a national TV station later confirmed they had paid for them to go to the Bulgarian capital Sofia, a three-hour drive away, for an interview scheduled to air Sunday night.
The previous day, however, Saska Ruseva had spoken to CNN's sister channel in Bulgaria TV7. She denied allegations she had sold her baby in Greece or that Maria had been trafficked abroad by a criminal gang.

The Roma village where \'Maria\' was found The Roma village where 'Maria' was found
"We gave her away. I didn't take any money. I didn't have any food to give to her. Since I saw her on the TV, I've been sick," she said.
Ruseva also said she did not initially name the girl "Maria" but had intended to call her "Stanka."
Even though the Rusevs had left the village for the weekend, two teenagers who say they are Maria's brother and sister -- 13-year-old Angel and 14-year-old Minka -- were home alone.
When I caught up with Angel he told me he had no idea the Rusevs had left. He told me he had just come back from school.
He doesn't speak Bulgarian -- neighbors were on hand to translate our conversation. Angel like many in Nikolaevo speaks only Turkish.
That, for historical reasons, is the language Roma speak here. Their ancestors arrived in the Balkans as soldiers or auxiliaries in the armies of the Ottoman Empire some 500 years ago.
A day's drive away across the border, Maria, now believed to be 5 or 6 years old, speaks no Greek. She has grown up speaking the Roma dialect, derived from ancient Sanskrit. That was the language Romas spoke when they migrated from India more than 1,000 years ago.
I caught up with a woman who says she's Maria's big sister --- Saska Ruseva's eldest daughter -- 20-year-old Katia, in the next village, Gurkevo.
Mystery girl's other life
Parents of Roma girl 'Maria' confirmed
'Maria' case makes waves in Europe
Roma father's child taken by Irish police
She has very pale skin, white-blond hair tinged with red, and her eyes are bothered by bright sunlight.
Maria, too, is very fair. And in the Roma camp where she was found, residents said Maria had been born with an eye problem, but they were unable to specify the exact diagnosis. When she was cured, the Roma threw a special celebration.
Katia explained to me that mother Saska had traveled to Greece in 2009 to work on the orange harvest.
"My mum was pregnant at that time and gave birth, but she did not have the money to bring her baby home. She did not sell Maria but left her there and came back to Bulgaria to try and arrange the documents," she said.
Investigators on both sides of the border, however, doubt that version of events. Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulo, the Greek Roma couple who raised Maria from a few months old, are still in custody charged with kidnapping.
And on Friday afternoon, Bulgarian police said they had launched a criminal investigation on suspicion the Rusevs had sold Maria for illegal adoption.
Law enforcement sources in Greece say Bulgarian women have in the past been detected traveling heavily pregnant into Greece. They say once they give birth they pass their children off to childless Greek couples for an agreed payment.
Underscoring those assertions, Greek police said Friday they had arrested a non-Roma Greek couple in Athens on charges of trying to buy a Roma baby for 4,000 euros ($5,500).
Investigators have not given any hint how long it may take to prove or discount their allegations that Maria may have been the victim of an illegal adoption.
What is immediately clear, though, is that she, like many Roma children, is a victim of crushing poverty. The European Union says of the estimated 12 million Roma in the EU, 90% live below the poverty line.
In Nikolaevo, many inhabitants say they, like Maria's parents, regularly travel to Greece to harvest fruit and vegetables.
In Greece, impoverished Roma in the camp where Maria was found say they are now faced with competition for farm jobs from Bulgarian, Romanian and Albanian Roma who are even more desperate than them and ready to work for as little as 10 euros a day.
As I said goodbye to Katia, she asked if Maria would be allowed to come home to the family.
"My mother really wants her to come and live with them. She's been crying, and she's so worried," she said.
For now, there seems little immediate prospect of a family reunion.
Bulgaria's Child Protection Services went to Nikolaevo on Friday to carry out what they said was an assessment of Saska Ruseva's "suitability as a parent" and the family's living conditions.
By nightfall, the same state officials were back with police to take Angel and Minka into protective care.
A female relative had taken in the youngsters. She began to wail loudly at the prospect of the adolescents being taken away.
Just then, we saw another neighbor dodge past the police officers and help Angel and Minka slip away into the night.

NAPOLI PLAN TORIO OF JANUARY TRANSFER
Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis claims that two defenders and a midfielder could be bought in the winter window, adding he "won the lottery" with Rafa Benitez's appointment
Napoli are looking at bolstering their squad with three players in the January transfer window, according to club president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
The Parteneopei brought in a host of fresh faces in the summer under new coach Rafa Benitez, including Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon, Dries Mertens, Raul Albiol and goalkeeper Rafael.
With money still in the bank following Edinson Cavani's €64 million move from the Stadio San Paolo to Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the new season, the Napoli chief has insisted that a trio of players could be arriving in the winter.
"We have a centre-back, a full-back and a midfielder on our list if we can find them," De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss.
"I have put my money to one side for these signings who we have already outlined. There are situations that could help us improve the squad."
Napoli currently sit second in Serie A after a strong opening eight matches and, ahead of the team's clash with Torino on Sunday, De Laurentiis lauded the coach for his efforts with the players since replacing Walter Mazzarri.
"I won the lottery with Benitez," he said. "He is managing the squad in the best way possible."

Tanzania launches offshore bid round

Tanzania is looking to take a stake of up to three quarters in any of eight offshore blocks which will go under the hammer in the country’s latest bid round, according to a report.
The emerging East African energy powerhouse opened its much-anticipated four licensing round on Friday that would see seven blocks in the Indian Ocean go up for grabs, www.upstreamonline.com reported.
At the inauguration, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said, “The production-sharing formula will either be 35 per cent to investors and 65 per cent to the government, or two per cent to them and 75 per cent to us,” according to Reuters.
“We will look at the possibility of selling (state-run Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation)’s shares in production-sharing agreements through (initial public offerings) in the future if we want more Tanzanians to participate in the oil and gas industry,” Kikwete added, according to the news wire.
Tanzania is offering a sextet of deep-water and ultra-deepwater blocks off the country’s east coast as well as the the lacustrine North Lake Tanganyika block.

Fabregas: I was right to snub man u

The midfielder hails the impact that Gerardo Martino has had on his growing influence at Camp Nou and insists that he did not consider a return to the Premier League in the summer
Cesc Fabregas believes that his decision to stay at Barcelona following Manchester United's interest has been vindicated by his performances for the Spanish champions this season.

The 26-year-old was targeted by David Moyes in the summer but was subsequently assured by the Blaugrana hierarchy that he was a valued member of the squad and would not be allowed a return to the Premier League.

And Fabregas has hailed the impact of Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino, claiming that the 50-year-old has been one of the main factors behind his form this term.

"The season's started brilliantly," the former Arsenal star told The Guardian. "[Martino] lets me play the way that suits my qualities and I'm very comfortable, very happy. I feel better all the time, more and more central. The coach is giving me more opportunities, more status, more leadership.

BARCELONA LATEST
7/1 Cesc Fabregas is 7/1 with BetVictor to score the first goal in El Clasico
"On the first day - well, not the first day, but maybe the third or fourth, early on - he called me over and told me: 'I want you to be the player you were at Arsenal' and I thought 'wow!' because I'd always felt so good at Arsenal, so important.

"I never planned to go back this summer," he declared. "It's not something I was even thinking about.

"I was always clear in my mind that I want to succeed at Barcelona and I'd give everything to triumph here. I said openly: I haven't even thought about leaving, I'm not going.

"When I heard [about United's bid], I contacted Darren [Dein, my agent] and he confirmed that it had come out officially. He said: 'Yes, it's true. What do you want to do?' I didn't know anything about it [until then].

"If a club comes in for you and you tell your representative that you want to go, then you go. I spoke to [Josep Maria] Bartomeu, the vice-president, and he told me: 'You're not going anywhere; we have complete confidence in you', then I spoke to the president.

"I was very relaxed about the whole thing because that's what they transmitted to me. It's true that they had offers, and they told me that, but the only thing in my head was staying at Barcelona. At no time did I say that I wanted to go and I stayed out of it. I was surprised. I didn't encourage them at all."

Women who are more powerful than Jonathan

Powerful women in Jonathan administration
Since inception, President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has been accused of impunity, usually caused by decisions and actions of the President, including those of his ministers and close associates.
Most of the glaring cases of abuse of power including reckless spending of taxpayers’ money have been carried out by the women in Jonathan’s cabinet. These women have proven to be more powerful than the number one citizen of Nigeria because despite public outcries that greet some of their decisions, they go scot-free.
Those who fall in this seemingly untouchable category are the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh; and the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah.
These powerful women have some things in common. They are all from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. Four of them had their higher education in the United States and two of them are daughters of traditional rulers. Needless to say they occupy some of the most strategic and ‘lucrative’ positions in the Federal Government.
PATIENCE JONATHAN
In Nigeria’s history, Patience Jonathan is believed to be the most powerful First Lady in terms of the amount of influence she has over her husband and his cabinet.
Mrs. Jonathan first gave a glimpse into the enormous power she wields in 2011 when she traversed the country, campaigning for her husband in a way that irked many Nigerians.
Several calls by individuals and groups to the President to restrain his wife yielded no result.
Also, in June this year, in apparent violation of the electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan reportedly started campaigning for her husband ahead of the 2015 elections.
Another show of impunity by the President’s wife is the way she cripples any town or city she visits with her long motorcade, including bulletproof limousines and scores of armed policemen.
She grounded Lagos in 2012 when she visited to say “thank you” to some women groups for their support in electing her husband.
Despite the protest by several Nigerians, who felt that their right to move freely in their country was violated by the movement of an unelected individual, the President’s wife was never cautioned, at least not publicly.
Instead, the Presidency rose to her defence, giving her the liberty to do more in other cities. Her visits and grounding of traffic in Port Harcourt and Warri were also greeted with wide condemnations.
To show how powerful she is, Mrs. Jonathan publicly admitted making attempts to dictate to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, a move that largely precipitated the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In Aso Rock, where she resides with her husband, the fear of Mrs. Jonathan is the beginning of wisdom as she leaves no one in doubt that she is in charge. There is always a retinue of favour seekers waiting to see her daily.
Mrs. Jonathan, a native of Bayelsa State, was born in Port Harcourt on October 25, 1957 and holds National Certificate of Education in Mathematics and Biology from the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, and a Bachelor of Education degree in biology and psychology from the University of Port Harcourt.
NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA
Right from when the negotiation to bring her from the World Bank started, it was obvious that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was bound to wield so much power in Jonathan’s government.
With her position as the coordinating minister for the economy (a new position created for her) and Finance Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, who is currently 83rd on Forbes’ global list of powerful women, calls the shots as far as Nigeria’s economy is concerned.
While doing that, she has called the bluff of many including state governors and the National Assembly without any consequence.
The state governors, who have complained about the shabby way the minister treat them, have called for her removal while the Academic Staff Union of Universities has called her a ‘dictator.’ But no matter the protest, Okonjo-Iweala remains a darling of the President.
The sacking of Mr. Shuaib Yushau as the Head, Media and Information Unit of the National Emergency Management Agency, after he wrote what was considered a critical article against Okonjo-Iweala, further showed that the minister was not to be messed with.
The article entitled ‘Still on Okonjo-Iweala over Controversial Appointments’, published on March 6, called on the minister “to ensure that appointments into important positions should be done in credible and transparent manner that can withstand public scrutiny.”
Similarly, Mr. Lawrence Ani, was reportedly suspended indefinitely from his job as Saturday Editor of Thisday Newspaper for publishing a story that cited data that indicated a drop in Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product under Okonjo-Iweala’s watch.
In 2011, against the opinion of the majority of Nigerians, Okonjo-Iweala and the  Minister of Petroleum Resources,  Diezani Alison-Madueke, insisted on the removal of fuel subsidy, and literally ordered it on the outset of 2012, resulting in the Occupy Nigeria protest.
Okonjo-Iweala, who also served as finance minister and foreign minister under President Olusegun Obansanjo and as a Managing Director at the World Bank, was born on June 13, 1954 to Professor Chukuka Okonjo, who is the Obi (traditional ruler) of Ogwashi-Uku.
She graduated from Harvard University in 1977, and earned her Ph.D. in regional economic development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981.
She is married to Ikemba Iweala from Abia State.
DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE
Virtually all sections of the Nigerian society have called for the resignation of the Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, all to no avail.
Most of those who sought her removal had cited several allegations of corrupt practices under her watch as reasons for their demand.
After the revelation of massive fraud in the fuel subsidy administration to the tune of N1.7trn, many had thought that heads would roll, including that of Alison-Madueke, who supervised the rot.
Some heads did roll, but not that of the queen of the Nigeria oil and gas industry.
Till date, the Presidency has not queried or probed Diezani over allegations against her and the indictment of departments under her by several panels, including those headed by Nuhu Ribadu, Farouk Lawan, and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede as well as the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative.
Diezani has also not explained to Nigeria, whom she was appointed to serve, what role she played in the massive corruption that led to the loss of huge amounts of public fund.
Apart from the demands for the Alison-Madueke’s resignation and prosecution by civil society groups, who led the Occupy Nigeria protest, the House of Representatives also demanded her removal as minister.
Despite this, the President did not suspend her, and gave no explanation for that. This shows how powerful she is.
Alison-Madueke is the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria, and in October 2010 she became the first woman to head a country’s delegation at the annual OPEC conference.
She was also the first female Minister of Transportation, and the first woman to be appointed to the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria.
Alison-Madueke was born on December 6, 1960 in Port Harcourt.
She graduated from Howard University in 1992, with a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and returned to Nigeria to join Shell Petroleum Development Corporation.
About 10 years later, she earned an MBA from Cambridge University and was appointed as the first female executive director of Shell Nigeria.
In 1999, she got married to Admiral Alison Madueke (retd), one-time Chief of Naval Staff who was at different times military governor of Imo and Anambra states.
STELLA ODUAH
Not many are aware of the tremendous power of the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, in Jonathan’s government.
For her role in Jonathan’s 2011 campaign, she was reportedly rewarded with a ministerial appointment to the aviation ministry, even though she had no prior training in the field of aviation.
Many believe that the President feels indebted to her for her role as the Director of Finance and Administration of the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation and in the establishment of Neighbour-to-Neighbour outfit, which reportedly spent billions of naira on adverts and media propaganda in favour of Jonathan, especially while the Occupy Nigeria protest lasted.
Considering this relationship with Jonathan, it should not be a surprise that Oduah’s response to critics after the Dana and Associated Airlines crashes reeked of arrogance.
The latest revelation that she forced the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to buy her bulletproof vehicles has again elicited calls for her removal and prosecution but considering the way the President has treated public outcries against these powerful women, Oduah is likely to remain minister till the end of Jonathan’s administration.
Princess Stella Oduah was born on January 5, 1962 to Igwe D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor in Anambra State on January 5, 1962.
She got her Bachelor’s degree in accounting and MBA from American universities.
Oduah joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1983 and in 1992, she established a petroleum products marketing company, Sea Petroleum & Gas Company Limited.
She was married to the former Minister for Works, Chris Ogiemwonyi.
ARUNMA OTEH
Through her battles, the Director-General of the Securities Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh, has sufficiently earned the name ‘Iron lady’ even beyond her official sphere of influence.
When she clashed with the House of Representatives Committee on the Capital Market, it was the chairman of the committee, Mr. Herman Hembe, that got hurt.
The committee had accused Oteh of fraud and misappropriation of funds. She fired back, accusing Hembe of demanding bribe from SEC.
The SEC board suspended Oteh in order to investigate the findings of the lawmakers, who probed the capital market and indicted her. She immediately petitioned the President and Okonjo-Iweala.
After two months, the President returned Oteh to her position, following the auditor’s report that said her offence amounted only to ‘administrative lapses.’ The directors and staff of the commission, who had protested Oteh’s alleged high-handedness, were advised to calm down and obey their boss.
On the other hand, Hembe was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and also stepped down as chairman of the committee.
The crisis led to an intense battle between President Jonathan and the House of Representatives. The House demanded the sacking of Oteh but Jonathan refused.
The passage of the 2013 budget was delayed because of the fight. Eventually, the lawmakers insisted on zero budget for SEC to force the President’s hand, but he did not budge.
Calls for her removal by civil society groups also fell on deaf ears.
Oteh, who is an indigene of Abia State, is also a British citizen.
She graduated with first-class degree in computer sciences from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka and earned her MBA from Harvard Business School.
