Fire outbreak at 2014 World Cup venue
A small fire broke out Friday at one of the stadiums under
construction for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, authorities said, adding
there were no injuries. "The fire reported Friday afternoon at the
construction site of the Pantanal Arena was quickly controlled" by
the construction crew and firefighters, said a statement from the
state's World Cup headquarters.
The incident will have no "consequences in the continuation of the project," it added.
The fire broke out in a batch of uninstalled polystyrene insulation panels intended for the roof of the building.
The Pantanal Arena, in Brazil's west-central city of Cuiaba, is one of 12 intended World Cup venues. It is around 85 percent complete, and world football governing body Fifa insists it will be ready by December, as required under the organisations regulations, despite warnings to the contrary from the Mato Grosso state governor.
Friday's statement from the World Cup headquarters in Mato Grosso reaffirmed the venue will be completed in December and inaugurated in January 2014.
The estimated cost of the project is 540 million reais (around $245 million).
